Good morning!

I’m coming to you live from my run thanks to a new mobile app. It transcribes what I say in real time - so this week you get a commentary as I cool down. How’s that for productivity?!

Completing Week 7 has been difficult for me for various reasons. I’d almost completed it a few weeks back when I got a cold that knocked me for six. And just when I thought I was over it, I went out and tried again (stocked up with lots of tissues!). Although I completed the run, I felt completely drained afterwards. I really wanted to train more, but after speaking to other runners -- including Ian -- I decided the best thing to do was to wait for it to pass.

So, I’m back at it today. It’s a Saturday morning and my last run was exactly a week ago. It’s beautiful out, so I’ve brought my daughter Saffy along to keep me company. There are lots of dog walkers around and spring is definitely in the air.

The run went fantastically well and I’m now on the cool down. I’m still managing to run continuously for 25 minutes, even though I’ve taken some time out to recover, which was a pleasant surprise. The distance I can cover is gradually increasing too, so I’m making solid progress!

Finding suitable footwear

Last night I had an interesting chat with one of my colleagues about trainers.

I’ve suffered some foot pain in my normal running shoes; the arches of my feet hurt quite a lot and I’m keen to find a solution. He suggested trying trail and barefoot trainers. He recently bought a pair of Merrell trail trainers and is seeing good results. They’re really thin, don’t have any contours in the sole, very little cushioning and they’re really light. Basically they’re halfway between normal trainers and barefoot trainers. They’re about £60 a pair, so it might be worth exploring in future.

Running tracks

Music-wise, I had a great playlist on the go this morning. The notable tracks were Black Keys’s Gold on the Ceiling and Prince’s Alphabet Street, which helped me pick up my pace. It’s such a cool song!

I’m now at the end my cool down and walking back home. To replenish my calories, I’m heading out for a family birthday celebration. It’ll be my reward for running again! I might take the dog out for a walk a bit later too, giving me a chance to stretch out my muscles.
